Scaling community-based small scale microgrids is a rewarding challenge that can help many last-of-line communities, but with few champions and resource-limited community leaders, the task may seem overwhelming, especially when one considers all the stakeholders that must be managed. The Cooperativa Hidroeléctrica de la Montaña — Puerto Rico's first electric cooperative — has recently launched the parallel development of ten community microgrids to support small businesses, community centers and residences in the rural communities of the central mountain range in Puerto Rico after signing a subrecipient agreement with the government of Puerto Rico. This project will provide lasting cost-effective resiliency for remote, last-of-line communities impacting the lives of tens of thousands of residents. Given the Cooperativa Hidroeléctrica de la Montaña's experience with its three hurricane-tested small microgrids in operation since 2022, this presentation will share shares lessons learned on how to foster and accelerate the development of microgrid projects.
