Islanded military microgrids must balance electricity supply with demand. As demand approaches the available generation capacity, loads shedding is often performed by operating building-level circuit breakers, meaning that entire buildings housing mission critical activities must be excluded from any load management, while those considered non-critical may lose service entirely. The goal of the work is to be able to perform more granular levels of load shedding in islanded microgrids through the integration of a microgrid controller and an OpenADR-compliant appliance. The presentation will describe the results from a field demonstration of this solution and includes descriptions of the control architecture, the results from both lab and field tests, and the cybersecurity implications.
